Fayetteville police: Juvenile shoots himself in struggle at Northwest Arkansas Mall; two people arrested

FAYETTEVILLE -- A juvenile shot himself during a struggle with police Sunday afternoon at the Northwest Arkansas Mall, according to Fayetteville police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Mauk.

The juvenile was a passenger in a vehicle that had been stopped by police for doing donuts in the mall parking lot around 3:30 p.m., Mauk said. The driver fled, but the passenger did not, he added.

Mauk said the passenger was carrying a pistol, and when police attempted to arrest him, a struggle ensued. During the struggle, a gun was fired, grazing the suspect and causing a non-life-threatening injury.

The juvenile was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Police were able to catch the driver of the vehicle while still on the mall property, Mauk said.

Both people were arrested. Their names and ages have not yet been released.
