Northwest Arkansas Aquarium Society

The Northwest Arkansas Aquarium Society will meet at 4 p.m. May 11 at Millwood Christian Church, 3450 W. Pleasant Grove Road in Rogers.

Lawrence Kent, who travels to Africa working for a humanitarian foundation, will speak on "Finding Cichlids and Catfish All Over Africa: 18 years and 18 countries."

Admission and refreshments are free. Everyone is welcome to this family-friendly meeting.

Handweavers

The Northwest Arkansas Handweavers Guild will meet at 10 a.m. May 11 at the Shiloh Meeting Hall on the campus of Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. Election of officers for the June 2024-May 2026 term will take place.

The program will be the final review of the two-year study on rugs including design principals that could apply to any handwoven item. Guests are always welcome

The Northwest Arkansas Handweavers Guild continues its year-long celebration of the 75th anniversary of its founding with a new exhibit at the Fayetteville Public Library in the Lucky Day area. Approximately 30 pieces will be on display for three months. Special programs and demonstrations will be held June 11 and July 11.

Andante and MAPS

In honor of National Music Week, the NWA Music, Art, Poetry Students (MAPS) invites the public to the "Music in the Park" event May 11 starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Loch Lomond Dam Pavilion on Glasgow Road in Bella Vista.

MAPS members and guests, presenting a variety of music and poetry, encourage interested persons to attend the free program and bring a comfortable chair. Refreshments are available.

Event highlights are singing "God Bless America" by Irving Berlin, and listening to "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin played on saxophone and digital piano. Well-known musician, Lisa Ferguson, will play folk music from aural tradition on hammered dulcimer. A poem, written by a resident poet, celebrating the National Music Week theme "Music...Yours, Mine and Ours" will be read. Enjoy guitar music extending to drum therapy music, all at one venue.

Andante Music Club of Bella Vista and MAPS also invite the public to The Plaza, 1 Highlands Crossing Drive, Bella Vista, May 10, at 4 p.m. to enjoy the well-known Southern Strings music ensemble. They will perform a variety of tunes emphasizing the National Music Week theme. Southern Strings is a unique group of musicians playing dulcimers, harps, psalteries, violins, acoustic guitar, and sometimes banjo. They play gospel, folk, traditional and mountain music in which the audience can sing along.

A featured concert, Tuesday, May 7, 6:30 p.m. at the Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel, opens with Bella Vista Mayor John B. Flynn reading and presenting a "National Music Week" Proclamation to the Andante Music Club and MAPS presidents. Musicians, singing and playing a cross-section of music types, will perform a program for the enjoyment of the audience.

Both Andante and MAPS plan music presentations at care and retirement facilities in northwest Arkansas all week.

The National Federation of Music Clubs, along with its local affiliates, recognizes the importance of music in the life of our nation and invites all, "friends of music" to participate in this great week of celebration.

Andante Music Club of Bella Vista is an affiliate of the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Arkansas Federation of Music Clubs.

Hill Hikers

The Ozark Hill Hikers, affiliated with the American Volkssport Association, invite all interested walkers to join them for a walk May 11 in Rogers. Registration is from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at Jiffy Kwik, 219 S. Arkansas in Rogers. The walk will start and end at Jiffy Kwik, where participants will choose either a 7K or 10K walk. The walks will take you around Lake Atalanta and through historic downtown Rogers. Free parking is available across the street and next door.

There is a fee of $4 for all walkers. Membership dues to the Ozark Hill Hikers are $12 a year prorated $1 for each month remaining in the calendar year.

American Legion

If you are looking for a place to hold a special event, the American Legion in Fayetteville can be that venue. Weddings, memorials, concerts, baby showers, birthdays or family reunions can be held at the hall at prices starting at $300. The Legion is located at 1195 S. Curtis Ave. in Fayetteville.

The post will be holding their 21st annual Northwest Arkansas Veterans Run June 15. Entry fee is $15 per rider and $5 for a passenger. Staging starts at 10 a.m. and the first bike out is at 11 a.m.

Activities include a dice run, live auction, food, door prizes, 50/50 and a quilt drawing.

All proceeds benefit the residents of the Fayetteville Veterans Home.

The Legion would like to remind the public to drop off old, tired and worn flags off at the post any time between 4 and 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. If necessary, call the post and leave a name and number and arrangements can be made for pickup. The Legion will provide the dignified retirement that the flag deserves.

Women's Connection

Bella Vista Christian Women's Connection will meet for brunch from 9 to 10:45 a.m. May 8 at the Bella Vista Community Church, 75 E. Lancashire Blvd. in Bella Vista.

The inspirational speaker will be Kris Driscoll from Belton, Mo. Her message is titled "Hey, Who's in Control Here?"

The special feature will be a presentation by Just Petaling Flower & Gift Shop.

Breakfast is $10 and reservations and/or cancellations are essential by 2:30 p.m. May 5.

The May Prayer Connection for Bella Vista Christian Women's Connection will be held at 9 a.m. May 1 at 35 O'Niell Circle in Bella Vista.

Reservations are not necessary for the Prayer Connection and all are welcome.

Bo's Blessings

Bo's Blessings and the Fayetteville National Cemetery is holding a headstone cleaning at 9 a.m. May 11 at the cemetery. Volunteers are needed. Cleaning supplies are provided, but long-handled brushes are helpful.

Calico Cut-Ups

Calico Cut-Ups Quilt Guild is offering Kids Quilt Kamp from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 17-21 at St. Theodore's Episcopal Church, 1001 Kingsland Road in Bella Vista. This is a free program offered to youth ages 10-18. Volunteers mentor the participants in helping them make a rail fence lap quilt. Sewing machines and irons are provided. All projects will be pre-cut, in kit form. Kids Quilt Kamp is funded through donations to Calico Cut-Ups Quilt Guild which is a 501c3 non-profit organization.
