BLYTHEVILLE , Ark. (KAIT) -The summer season is fast approaching, which means that schools will be closed, and pools will be open.

The City of Blytheville announced that the Walker Park Pool will soon be accessible to the public.

“We plan to open the pool on time this year,” said Parks and Information Manager Darrius Nichols. “We started to plan to open Memorial Day weekend.”

Last year, there were challenges with keeping water in the pool, which delayed its opening until August.

However, this year, Nucor and other community members have come forward to help solve the problem.

“We kind of built back up everything that’s kind of our downfalls, and we feel like we’re in a position now to open on time and give the kids their summer,” said Nichols.

Blytheville residents are excited to hear about the pool’s opening, especially after last year’s late start.

“It’s a very big deal. It’s a very big deal because I can recall as a native here in Blytheville when I was up and coming the swimming pool was very important,” said Coby Gillespie.

Gillespie said the pool has been around for generations and now his grandchildren and great-grandchildren can enjoy it too.

He added that there aren’t many things for young adults to do in the town, and the community pool will provide a fun and affordable way to spend their summer days.

“There’s a few things for them to do, but just overall, no it’s not much,” said Gillespie. “It will give the kids and young adults things to do other than going around getting hotel fees just to go swimming.”
