Agartala (West Tripura) [India], May 1 (ANI): The secretary of a community club in Tripura's Agartala was shot dead in on Tuesday evening, officials said.

According to the officials, the incident took place on Tuesday evening when a group of criminals fired from a close-range, killing Durga Prasanna Deb in the Shalbagan area.

Deb was the secretary of the Bharat Ratna Club, located near the MBB Airport, known for organising the largest Durga Puja festival in the State.

The assailants fled the scene after the incident, the officials added.

"Police teams comprising personnel from Airport Police station and New Capital Complex police station have launched a joint manhunt to catch the assailants. Repeated raids were being conducted in the potential hideouts of the accused person," Superintendent of Police of West Tripura district, Dr Kiran Kumar said.

Dr Kumar also informed ANI over the phone that he had been personally leading the raids in the potential hideouts of perpetrators.

Sharing further details on the incident, SDPO New Capital Complex, Subrata Barman said, "The incident happened at around 8 pm. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident and we are making all possible efforts to track down the accused persons."

The SDPO is also part of the police teams raiding the hideouts.

Speaking to ANI, another senior police official said, "The deceased person went to the spot of occurrence on his two-wheeler. He was standing at the spot when the assailants arrived at the spot with a car and went on a shooting spree. He suffered multiple bullet injuries which led to his death. The mortal remains have been shifted to a private hospital here in Agartala."

According to police sources, the possible reason behind the incident is a power tussle between two active groups. (ANI)
