TOKYO -- Nearly half of new hires at Japan's three leading banks this fiscal year will be midcareer workers, hiring plans show, as lenders seek specialized talent rather than hiring new graduates who are then trained as generalists.

MUFG Bank, Japan's top bank, plans to add 600 midcareer employees and 400 new graduates, with the former outnumbering the latter for the first time.
